You know what they say: “It’s you vs. you”. Because becoming who you want to be isn’t just about doing the right things, it’s also avoiding what is not aligned with who you want to be. 🌱

At the end of the day, your future depends on you. ⌛

All the big things you’re aiming at whether that’s enrolling in your dream uni, starting a business or just being a loving friend, mother or daughter - it all depends on the small choices you make on an hourly basis. 🧠

And if there is one simple thing that can help you become more present and productive each day, would you be ready to do it?

Okay, here comes one thing you absolutely have to stop doing…

🎯🎯🎯Checking your phone first thing in the morning🎯🎯🎯

What you do right after you wake up determines the tone of your whole entire day.

See, whenever you check your phone or scroll through social media you get a quick dopamine hit.

Dopamine is a molecule that gets released when you’re doing something pleasurable. It makes you feel good and then you want more and more of that feeling.

In the morning our brain is well rested and more impressionable. That’s why if you provide it with a high-dopamine-producing activity it will crave that activity even more throughout the whole day. 💊

In other words, checking your phone first thing in the morning will make you more of a slave to your phone throughout the whole day.🔗🔗🔗🔗🔗

But that’s not all.

When you check your phone in the morning you immediately see all the notifications, messages, emails and updates from social media which triggers a sense of urgency.🚨

That elevates your cortisol levels and disrupts the clear-minded calmness you just naturally woke up with.🔴

You’re stressed and overloaded with information before even stepping out of bed! And for what? 🤦🏽‍♀️

Would it cost you anything to do all of this a bit later, after you’ve had a minute to appreciate your morning?

You are quite literally destroying your brain for the sake of a few Instagram notifications and emails. 🙄

I could go on and on about all the reasons why this is so bad, but I think you got the point.

☝ So… how do we stop this???

  • When you go to bed, turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data on your phone. If someone really needs you they will reach you via a regular call or SMS. That way you will not see any new notifications when you turn off your alarm in the morning. ✅

  • Stopping this habit will be easier if you replace it with another dopamine inducing activities.

  • Choose any other morning activity other than checking your phone. Here are some ideas:

    • have a tasty, nutritious breakfast

    • exercise

    • meditate/ pray

    • journal

    • practice visualization

    • get some sunlight

    • stretch

    • read

    • talk to a loved one

    • express gratitude

    • take extra time to dress up cute

  • Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy some other activity for at least 20-30 minutes after you wake up.
